Lector Training

Does each Lector have a Lector Workbook?

If you prefer to read alone, please let Terri Borrelli know.

Dress appropriately – No blue jeans, tank tops or halter tops.

Arrive at church at least 10 minutes before Mass.

Check with Father to be sure there are no changes in anything.  Before Mass, go over readings then place lectionary on lectern, turn on light and adjust microphone.

First lector on list does first reading and announcements.

Second lector on list does second reading and Prayer of the Faithful IF THERE IS NO DEACON.

IF THERE IS NO DEACON, the Book of the Gospels will be carried by one of the lectors, laid on the altar, then go to your place and genuflect with Father.

First reader should go to lectern after the Opening Prayer – wait for about 10-15 seconds before going up.  Profound bow to the altar before entering the sanctuary (no genuflection or sign of the cross, because of the centrality of the altar).  At end of reading, pause few seconds, then say “The Word of the Lord.”

After you have finished the first reading, leave the sanctuary and turn and make a profound bow tot the altar before you go back to your seat.

After announcing “A reading from….” Count 1-1000, 2-1000 – before beginning to read.  Don’t rush.  SPEAK INTO THE MICROPHONE.  Be aware of your speed, inflection and eye contact.  Reading should not be memorized but proclaimed (it may be the only scripture some people hear all week).  Read it like you mean it!!

At end of reading pause a few seconds again, then say “The Word of the Lord.”

At the send of the second reading, lector should place lectionary on shelf underneath with binder on top of it.  After leaving the sanctuary, turn and make a profound bow to the altar before going back to your seat.

For the Prayer of the Faithful you should go lectern at the words in the Creed, “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.”  Don’t rush, but be at the lectern and ready for the prayer when Father ends his introduction to the Prayer of the Faithful.

Lector is responsible for taking collection to Sacristy, place in a bag and put in top left hand drawer where the song numbers are located.  This is at all masses but 10:30 AM. If two collections, use two separate bags.

Lectors do not go out in the recessional line.

At the end of the Mass, after Father has left the altar and the final hymn is ended, lector will lead “the Serran Prayer.”  This will be done by the first lector who will be reading the announcements.  Stay in the sanctuary after reading the announcements, then you will be ready to lead the Serran Prayer.
